Facebook accidentally put hidden messages like 'Big Brother is Watching' and 'The Masons Were Here' in 'tens of thousands' of VR controllers

...

These messages were intended only for prototypes, but a mistake meant they were included in regular production devices, he said. Some messages were included in developer kits for people building software for the product, while others made their way into consumer devices in significantly larger numbers.

Mitchell added: "While I appreciate easter eggs, these were inappropriate and should have been removed. The integrity and functionality of the hardware were not compromised, and we've fixed our process so this won't happen again."

Still, the fact that Facebook, of all companies, is having to publicly apologize for shipping a product with secret messages like the one touting Big Brother — I mean, Facebook itself is already seen in the minds of some people as an all-seeing Big Brother, with a ravenous appetite for all of the data on users that it can possibly hoover up. I’d argue that the company’s much touted imminent shift of emphasis towards messaging, subtly moving away from the “public square” of the News Feed, is in part a reaction to declining usage that stems from its users’ concerns about privacy…

The messages can be found on what’s called the “flex,” which is an internal flexible component in the Oculus Touch controllers. So most VR users won’t actually see the message unless they start poking around in the internal components of the Touch controllers… Regardless of the situation, Mitchell owns up to the snafu and assures people that the integrity of the products are not compromised, there are just some weird messages on them. Maybe in time the “Easter egg” will make those controllers a collector’s item…

Oculus' co-founder Nate Mitchell has said on Twitter that tens of thousands of Oculus Touch controllers shipped with bizarre Easter Egg messages hidden inside on internal hardware that are privacy related. Since the messages are inside on the hardware, you won't see them when using the controllers… One of the messages hidden on the hardware inside the controller reads "The Masons Were Here" on a cable. Some of the controllers have a message that reads "Big Brother is Watching," but Mitchell says that only dev kits have that joke inside. The messages were meant only for prototype hardware but somehow made it to production hardware… Other strange messages include "Hi iFixit! We See You," and another Cable read "This Space for Rent." Mitchell apologized for the Easter Eggs inside the hardware and says the fact that they made it into production hardware is "inappropriate." The executive also notes that internal processes have changed to prevent anything similar from happening in the future…

Crack open one of these controllers and in the device’s guts you might find a message like “The Masons were here” inscribed on a cable. Other devices apparently shipped with “Big Brother Is Watching,” but according to Mitchell only developer kits have that joke inscribed in them… Mitchell’s statement goes on to apologize for these Easter Eggs slipping past the prototype phase and into production, calling them “inappropriate” and saying their internal processes have been changed to avoid this happening again…

“Tens of thousands” of unreleased consumer units have the phrases “This Space For Rent” and “The Masons Were Here.” written while some of the developer units have “Hi iFixit! We See You!” and, perhaps most embarrassing, “Big Brother Is Watching” inscribed internally… For the most part this is just kind of dumb and funny; it’s a bit embarrassing for a finished hardware product to have phrases with a conspiratorial slant inside of them, but it’s also affecting buyers in zero meaningful ways as it’s not visible unless you pry it open, which you have limited reason to do unless you are indeed iFixit… That said, it’s better that they come clean rather than have consumers or developers pry their headsets open to find some of these phrases. For a company with so many privacy screw-ups in the past year, having your big hardware releases ship to some developers with ‘Big Brother Is Watching” inscribed inside isn’t the best look…

Modern tech companies love to think that if they make enough cutesy jokes comparing themselves to Skynet or Tyrell or OCP or any other scary evil tech company from a movie, we won’t notice when they act like actual scary evil tech companies from movies. Any place with a motto like “Don’t be evil” couldn’t possibly be evil… So what kinds of messages are we talking about? Stuff like “Big Brother is Watching” or “The Masons Were here.” “Hi iFixit! We See You!” Nothing really that bad, but just kind of embarrassing and juvenile to leave in. While some outlets are reporting this as an offensive mistake, most people responding on Twitter seem to appreciate the mild gallows-humor of the messages. The only one to draw much condemnation is “Big Brother is Watching” – which is perhaps to be expected, given that this is a Facebook product we’re talking about… Mitchell didn’t quite apologize for the mistake, but did say that their inclusion was “inappropriate.” How inappropriate it is for a gaming-focused company to include jokes in their hardware is up for debate. Evidently it’s not bad enough to recall the controllers, which instead might just become one of the first VR collector’s item…

The problem is these Easter eggs were supposed to appear just on prototype units, not consumer and market model, but they "accidentally" ended up being printed on more units than originally intended. Some messages were also included in developer kits for people building software for the product, while others made their way into consumer devices meant for commercial distribution… While it's not a particularly critical issue, having "Big Brother Is Watching" engraved onto a Facebook-owned product is ironic considering the company's current battles on data privacy and surveillance. As for "The Masons Were Here," that could be a reference to the Freemasons, a fraternal organization many conspiracy theorist say has a huge influence on authorities. Facebook is among the platforms that have been criticized for paving the way for agents to spread fake news, conspiracist content, and downright hatred, so it makes sense to some degree… Even still, Facebook representative Johanna Peace said affected units would not be recalled once they're shipped, which makes plenty of sense seeing as those messages won't affect how the product performs at all…

MANY OF US feel a bit squeamish about Facebook watching us, even if we don't feel squeamish enough to stop using its software. But as long as it isn't actively bragging about its creepy reach, we can at least fool ourselves into accepting everything's fine long enough to fire off another Instagram message… Given these affected controllers will likely become collectors' items, Mitchell has almost certainly ensured that more Oculus controllers will be cracked open than would have been without the promise of a hidden surprise. Presumably, the company's calculation was that this would have been a lot worse if a developer had found it by chance and shared the story around the web…

These messages are obviously not going to do anyone any harm and the product will continue to function as it’s supposed to. This is just funny and perhaps even dumb to some extent as you’d expect such a big company to have processes in place that prevent prototype easter eggs from being shipped out to the customers… At least they have done the right thing and made this public themselves before developers or consumers found them out and wondered why their Touch controller says “Big Brother Is Watching.” …
